Bailey's Crossroads

There may not be an elephant buried at the crossroads but the namesake for this Northern Virginia community is credited to the Bailey circus family. Bailey’s Crossroads is situated across an expanse of level ground and is bounded on the west by Munson’s Hill. The area rose to prominence during the American Civil War when the Confederate Army took Bailey’s Crossroads and occupied Munson’s Hill, which provided a strategic vantage point over the surrounding region and a view straight into the heart of the capital.
